Mastering

The Last Step Before CD Duplication!

There is so much to know about mastering that it can, and has, filled hundreds of books. Mastering is the final audio step before CD duplication and before your listeners pop your CD into their player and hear your music! It's REALLY important.

Mastering isn't just getting your volume levels up, it's that and much more. Usually mastering, at a minimum, involves the following process:
  • Remove Noise (Hum, Pops, Clicks)
  • Remove Vocal artifacts: Plosives (P/B/K/C Pops), Sibilance (Sss), Breaths
  • Bring the sound alive (if needed). Sometimes a flat-sounding performance can be resurrected to a greater vitality
  • Song order (sequence) to create a CD-long "feel" to your release
  • Get the volume level as high as possible (WITHOUT COMPROMISING THE DYNAMICS AND QUALITY OF THE MUSIC!!!) Volume isn't everything; it's important, but loud doesn't always mean good or better.
  • Create a Redbook Compliant CD to be sent to your CD duplicator (Including the necessary PQ reports)
There is a LOT involved in mastering a CD. Be warned that mastering is not wizardry (it's close though) and sometimes there are noises that can't be removed because it would mean removing some of the music. Occassionally a breath or a pop is at the same exact frequency as one of the instruments and to remove the heavy P-plosive would mean cutting out a piece of that great bass guitar. It's always a case-by-case basis.

We work with you every step of the way. The work of art is yours, so we make no decisions without your involvement. This can all be done long-distance or you can come and work with us personally. With today's great means of communication, long-distance works just fine. Once we have finished you will have several days to spend listening to your final CD to make sure it's just how you want it before we consider the project completed.
